Takanuva had never had a good relationship with the night. As far back as he could remember—traveling around as Takua, the Chronicler—he had been wary of the dark, always making sure he had lightstones handy for his trips through black as coal caves and times when the twin moons weren’t at their brightest. Since he had defeated Makuta, however, he had found himself being even more wary of the night, seeing things that weren’t there, sweeping shadows and piercing eyes.

It was all wrong. It wasn’t supposed to be that way. He was the Toa of Light for Mata Nui’s sake! He could banish darkness with the flick of a wrist, turn menacing corners into sunlit happiness with a simple glance.

But it scared him still. He could hear the Makuta’s voice in his head every time he so much as glanced under his bed and would immediately regret merging with the Master of Shadows. It had somehow tainted him, or so he would often think.

Despite all this, the terrors would magically pass with the coming of that auburn embrace, a gentle kiss on his temple to say everything was all right. The heat from his partner would fight back the cold that liked to wrap around his limbs, threaten to suffocate him. He’d take a breath then lose it again to the Toa of Stone’s mouth, reveling in the warmth. It was like the room was filled once again by the light of mid-day—not the middle of the night darkness.

Taka twined their legs together and buried his head in the crook of Pohatu’s neck, shutting his eyes to the moons and instead seeing the suns through his bedroom window. In his own little world, where Pohatu would always be right there beside him, there would always be sunlight.
